News from Sweet’s Corners Elementary School
This September brings some exciting changes to our school. On Tuesday, September 5th, we welcomed our new principal, Valerie Horsfall.
Sweet’s Corners is also now home to a before- and after-school program. The EduCare Children’s Center is fully licensed, privately owned and offers subsidized care – also during March Break, Summer and Christmas holidays, and PA Days! For more information, contact email@example.com or 613-246-2008.
We are so happy to have a brand new track. With a very generous grant from the Township of Leeds & the Thousand Islands and matching funds from our school board, we were able to get the track completely graded and resurfaced. Work was completed in August and students have already been trying it out. We also have new long and triple jump pits located near our fantastic track.
Almost a year ago, our school was included in a board accommodation review and was being considered for closure. With a dedicated school council and tremendous support from our staff, school family and the surrounding community, including members of both SBARA and the Lyndhurst Rejuvenation Committee, we made a strong, rational presentation to the accommodation review committee. When the final report was drafted, our school was no longer included.
Community support and usage is a key factor for a healthy school. Last year we began a “sponsored hot lunch” program in which one hot lunch each month was sponsored by a local individual, organization or business and offered to all students in the school. These lunches were very popular with the vast majority of our students and staff. I am happy to report that they will continue and we welcome new sponsors.
There are many ways to show your support for Sweet’s Corners – volunteer your time at the school, donate to our Nutrition 4 Kids program, support our fundraisers, attend our events. To keep up to date on upcoming events you can follow the school and council on Facebook at Sweet’s Corners Elementary School – UCDSB or Sweet’s Corners School Council.
For more information, contact the school at 613-928-2777. I am looking forward to the school’s Open House on September 20th when families can meet the teachers and view the classrooms.
